Women's air service pilots from WWII honored on Veteran's day

On November 11th 2009, at the Mather AFB San Jose, CA Veterans Day celebration, women were honored for their service to the United States during World War II. Only 300 out of the 1000 who served in the Women's Air Service Pilots are still alive.
During the war, there was a shortage of man to serve in the different military branches. The Air force was in big need of crews to delver the thousands of new aircrafts rolling off the assemblt lines to the troops in the bases overseas, an example of where help was needed is Willow Run Airport in Detroit.
Like any other soldier, these women wore uniforms. They transported more than 12,000 aircrafts during the war. they also flight tested aircrafts after they were repaired to free the male pilots from leavung their missions over the war zone. Impressively, women pilots came a little better than males in the home front flying.
By the end of 1944, these women unfortunately had to give up their passion for flying and returned to be regular housewives. They could not go on with their careers and duties as enough men were available to take over.
A special award ceremony will be organized in Washington, DC by the US congress to decorate them with the Congressional Gold Medal as a recognizition to their service.
